Raw Food Rehab

No rigid rules, labels or dogmas.... just REAL food, for your body, mind & soul!

I have some crappy looking broccoli in my garden which is just laden with white fly...as in millions!  I've tried loads of things to get rid of them but nothing seems to work. So I decided to try an experiment and just leave them be and hope that the pests would be attracted to the broccoli and leave the other plants alone....to a degree it seems to have worked.

Well, yesterday I was looking at said broccoli plants which were getting crappier and crappier as each day went by and I decided that it was time to dig them up.  As I was busy I asked my husband to do it for me....big mistake : (   He doesn't eat anything vegetable (I know but it's just too hard) and I thought I'd given him good directions about where the plants were...in fact he even commented about the whitefly.

Later in the day I noticed that the broccoli was still there and I thought my request had fallen on deaf ears so I made a mental note to myself to do that job later.   I also went out to pick some parsley from some very healthy looking plants which I have been nurturing during the summer months....guess what?  No parsley: (   I could have wept.....what could I say?  Where was it?  Not even on my compost but in the dustbin (garbage bin).  Think I'll do my own gardening in future and leave him to fiddle around with his solar lights....I don't want to eat them.

Hey Angela....when I first started drinking wheat grass juice it made me feel sick also.  I started out with 1 ounce diluted in 8 ounces of water and had to sip that slowly.  But it wasn't long before I was downing 4 ounces straight at a time....you just need to get through it..it's detoxing you.......as it soooo good for you!

Pour some of the juice on your broccoli...it will probably kill the white flys.   Whiz up some raw garlic in water or oil and pour that on them...I used to use citrus oil cleaner until I realized it didn't just kill the bugs...it killed the plant as well (my first try I thought the leaves had died because the bugs had weakened them so much...but later I realized nope, the stuff is just too strong for plants.)

Thanks djd I did try some garlic and chilli spray which I bought and it seemed to have a limited effect on the whitefly (the chilli smelled quite strong) but caterpillars didn't like it. If I make my own I can control how strong it is can't I? I read that whitefly is attracted to yellow so I put some yellow plastic from an ice cream container on a stake then smeared the yellow with Vaseline (it's a pretty horrible way to die) so once the whitefly landed it couldn't take off again....I bought a commercial one and I had difficulty unsticking my fingers from the sticky stuff!  But I want to try growing kale again and the whitefly loooove kale too!!!

So djd you're part of the inner sanctum of gardening mishaps too are you?  : ) : ) : )

Lyza I haven't posted any photos...I get a bit self conscious about myself because I'm not particularly photogenic....I might scare you one day and a photo will appear : (  So there aren't any wheatgrass photos either....I don't even know how to upload photos : (  I don't even know how to put my name to a blog that's why it always says "me"   :  )  It's been raining a lot during the night and my wheatgrass is in a sheltered spot outside but it's looking a little worse for wear after it's drenching....still useable though : )   :( : ( : (  bit of happy but I still don't like it.

Sorry about the mishap--I know how that is--never mind how....  :-))

Have you tried a garlic spray on the broccoli?  A clove of garlic pressed into a liter of water, then spray on the plants.  That helps with a lot of things like aphids, black fly; not sure about white fly.

Ooh I should totally get on the wheatgrass train!  I'd love to see your wheatgrass!  Is it in your photos?! :)

Thanks for your replies ladies...yes Gill I agree if you don't laugh you certainly would cry!

Lyza I'm not much good at growing things indoors but fortunately our winters here in Adelaide are quite mild. So onwards and upwards as they say....hey you should see my trays of wheatgrass!  It makes me feel sick to drink the juice but I have to persevere...it's medicine isn't it? : (

Hello Emily!  I've been thinking about you (missed you too). How are you? Hugs to you too XXX

Love to everyone Angela XXX

Oh Angela!!!  Poor dear!  The loss of your parsley.  I hope you can grow some more, even if it's indoors perhaps, and enjoy it then.  Sending you hugs (I've missed you!)    xoxoxox

Awww :(  Lol it is sad but it's almost so funny I probably would have hugged him if I were you!!!

My mom, who always had a small garden while I was growing up, never grew broccoli ever because she said it was too hard :P  I'm sure she was referring to the pest issue and just didn't want to talk about it--that would be like her. :P

I love Alessandra's advice :)  Also you could grow some inside!  That's what I'm going to try to do! :)

Alessandra in retrospect it's a bit funny but still sad : (   I have some more growing in another spot.. Ssh

It's autumn here in South Australia but we're a bit like California and can grow things almost year round...trouble is parsley takes a long time to germinate : (

BTW  The crappy looking broccoli with the whitefly is still there...
