Raw Food Rehab

Adding LIFE to your years and years to your life!

Yesterday was the kick-off of my transition week into raw foods!  I am quite new to all of this and am trying to educate myself as I go.  So, if any one has any advice for me, feel free to chime in.

I went shopping over the weekend and stocked up big time.  I really have no idea how long this amount of food will last.  I found everything I was looking for except kale.  I was disappointed at the small amount of organic produce offered in my area.  Luckily, the farmers market should be opening up within a month or so. I came home and gave everything a good wash.  For this first week I am slowly decreasing caffeine and allowing myself to have a small amount of fish or chicken with my evening meal.  I did feel a little hungry yesterday at times.  I made a green smoothie with a green apple, spinach, celery, cucumber, lemon, banana, and a little ginger.  I made 32 oz and could not finish it, but I did drink a lot of water also.  I had a spinach, strawberry, and avocado salad for lunch with 1/4 cup raw almonds.  During the day I kept raw snacks at my desk like strawberries, asparagus, apple, celery.  For dinner I had assorted cumcumbers, red peppers, pears, and a small piece of chicken.

Here is some of what I purchased:

If there are any suggestions for additions or subtractions feel free to comment, as I am eager to learn.

Today, I decided to start with a fruit smoothie instead.  Yummy!  I used fresh pineapple, 2 bananas, a large orange, some ice and water.  I will make a green smoothie this afternoon and perhaps leave out the ginger for now.  I like ginger, but I it was a little overpowering yesterday and I wonder if that is the reason I couldn't finish it.  (Is it true that my green smoothie is not good after 24 hours?)

I know this is just water weight, but my scale was down 3.8 pounds this morning. Now to get my blood pressure down!

Next week I plan to be off of all caffeine and all meat. (maybe before) I am shopping for a juicer this weekend as I would like to try fresh juices also.  I do not know which type to get, a masticating type or a centrifugal force type.  I want to juice green leafy veggies as well as carrots and apples.  Any opinons on that?

Have a great week everyone!

Coffee is a tough one, especially when some are saying a cup a day is beneficial. How confusing is that!?! Looking for improving is easier than aiming for perfection. A lifetime of eating crap is not easy changing, but with persistent baby steps you learn it!

You are in great company! Lots of great advice, recipes, videos, buddies! It is all available here!

Hi Maria!  Five years raw?  That's great!  I appreciate you comments so much.  It really helps me to hear from others who have been on this same journey.  I don't know anyone personally who eats a raw food diet.  I will take baby steps.  That is great advice.  I am taking baby steps coming off my caffeine addiction this week.  I may be a little tired feeling, but so far no headaches. Yea!  Thanks Maria!  Have a great week!

It is so exciting watching someone else getting started! It is a journey. Listen to your own body. There is nothing that you could be doing wrong! Take baby steps and listen to what your body tells you.

I started about 5 years ago. First I eliminated all of the red meats, eventually let go of chicken. I still get an occasional want for some fish. I am mostly eating raw, fresh, fruit, vegetables, seeds and nuts. I find it just gets easier on its own. I don't push but I do stick with it. Always looking for recipes, and experimenting with flavors. It all becomes as easy as eating the crap used to me.

Welcome and enjoy your journey!

Kernowcrone~Also glad to know you do well getting green juice from you centrifugal juicer.  I was not sure that type would do a good job.

Kernowcrone~Thanks so much for your support!  I am so excited to be on this new journey!  I will check out the Tool Shed for information on juicers.  I am very grateful to find you and others in this raw food community for support.

Jane~ I agree that we should enjoy every bite of food we eat.  Glad to know you use your Vitamix daily.  That is a good endorsement.  I am still trying to sort through the mountain of discussion on juicing vs blending.  Whoo!  It makes my head spin.  Thanks you very much for the encouragement.

Hi Pam,

I'd also recommend buying the best equipment you can afford.  I longed for a vitamix for five years (they’re even more expensive in England) until I finally bought one with my credit card, and I haven’t looked back!  I use it at least once every day!  You can look in the ‘Tool Shed’ for information about equipment.  As far as food/drink is concerned I enjoy vegetables more than fruit and add a variety of greens to salads, juices and smoothies.  Try looking in the ‘Kitchen Recipe Centre’ for suggestions about ingredients.

Finally, I’d personally recommend NEVER eating something horrible just because it’s good for you (a tall glass of nettle juice is not for me; though I don’t mind nettle tea with a bit of date syrup, etc).

Good luck on your raw food journey :-)
