Comment by Janet Carol Ryan on July 14, 2012 at 11:54am Thank you Barbara - what I learned from your method is the drilling of holes in the bottom of the container and the use of potting soil (up until now I've only been sprouting micro-greens with water only in a little stacking tray set-up with holes in the bottom - works fine for the little sprouts) I am excited to 'branch out' and sprout sunflowers into a lively little countertop garden!
Comment by Barbara on July 14, 2012 at 7:35am Thanks Leaf for the video link, I shall go and watch that. I had heard of it before but not seen the video.
Pea sprouts are grown in the same way as below and are absolutely delicious!
Comment by Barbara on July 14, 2012 at 7:32am It's really easy to grow them, the containers are from the Dollar store, drill drainage holes in the bottom and use the lid as a tray to catch the water. Add a thin layer of potting soil. Soak the seeds overnight in a jar with a lid, the water full up to the lid, then put mesh on the top of the jar. I use screening with an elastic band, or you can buy sprouting jars. Rinse and drain twice a day until the little tails appear, usually within a day or two at the most. Then spread the seeds onto the soil. Water lightly twice a day. I cover them with brown paper to keep them dark on my counter top. As soon as the sprouts start to push the paper up take the paper off. Stand them in a light spot and watch them grow. Harvest before the third leaf appears or they become spicy. You can find the instructions on Sproutpeople.org They have lots of videos on all of the sprouting seeds.
Comment by Leaf on July 14, 2012 at 1:34am Do you know this TED talk about plant intelligence? I love the fragment of 'playing' sunflower sprouts! Your post reminded me of that, and I'm sharing it because I think you might like it as well :)
