Adding LIFE to your years and years to your life!
Ran to the grocery store to pick up a few quick things. It occurred to me that I spend most of my time in the produce area, and I'm buying fewer & fewer things anywhere else. Used to be a grocery store trip could take up to an hour, but now, it's 15 minutes or less. I usually head to the organic section, and then whatever I can't find there, I'll get in the regular section. Then I'll grab a few things elsewhere, like aluminum foil, etc.
I'm buying fewer groceries overall, making a lot more things from scratch, and spending more money at the local natural food store to get my raw nuts, flax seeds, etc.
When I had that realization, I started looking around at all the stuff I'm NOT buying. I never buy prepared products, canned vegetables, cookies, donuts, most condiments, and of course, no meat or eggs. The vast array of stuff for sale there that I would never consider buying is enormous! The ideas food manufacturers have come with is mind-boggling, when you think about it. Six different flavours of croutons, 100 different glops to put on your salad, a zillion things to do with your ground beef, all kinds of potato things that come in a box, sweet flavorings for your water, all kinds of things to bake and mix to help you pretend you're cooking...
Let me note that this realization didn't come about when I decided to go raw. I was weaning myself off of grocery store fare for years. I do feel, though, that this raw choice is the ultimate destination of my journey.
And let me also note that I'm not being smug or judgemental. Twenty years ago, I bought a lot of that stuff (except for the meat, because I was a junk-food loving vegetarian).
A quick update from yesterday: I commented that my husband never eats anything that I've made with the dehydrator. Today he brought home some kale and said that he MIGHT try kale chips. My daughter & I love them. So they're dehydrating now. If he likes them, I might introduce him to cheezy kale chips. He's suspicious of nutritional yeast, but maybe this will convince him.
