Real Food Rehab

No rigid rules, labels or dogmas.... just REAL food, for your body, mind & soul!

As I decided to take a step closer to a healthier life style and to daily making decisions, that in the long run will help me maintain and achieve my ultimate goal; I came across several books, people and resources that encourage juicing as one of the tools to help and even prevent weight gain. This is one of the many benefits and rewards anyone can get from juicing.

There is no formula or right answer to finally banish fat and prevent it from ever coming back, this is simply a step to better and enjoyable eating habits. We can learn and achieve the knowledge to boost our moods, charge up the immune system, lose weight, prevent common colds, stop indigestion and poor circulation by eating right, exercising, and juicing as part of our daily journey.

I have always tried to find just the right diet and concept to help me lose weight, however I discovered that it is a lot more complicated than that. I believe that many forms of diets may work if you stick with it forever, but as a long-term commitment it doesn’t give room for mistakes, and if you fail, as a result of that failure you’ll find yourself in the same place as when you started.

So what fundamentally need to change is our mindset and the way we view food. Not as a forbidden thing for 10, 20, 30 days, but as abundant and nurturing lifestyle choices. What your body truly needs is not ridiculous amount of food, but the right amount of minerals and vitamins. These may be lacking in your current diet due to the overload of processed foods. Many of them are found in the homemade cooked foods that you love but you are not eating enough of them to actually cause a change, and as a result, it will not be enough to fulfill and nurture your body completely. Let’s say you are in what some doctors call a SAD diet (Standard American Diet) that includes: high levels of animal fats, unhealthy saturated fats, low in fiber, low in complex carbohydrates and low in plant-based foods. That is one of the reasons why your body might be always asking for more vitamins and minerals but we mistake those feelings for hunger and your body is still famished for more of the right nutrients, and that’s where today’s journey starts. I am going to explain to you why juicing is so important and essential for everyone.

When you juice you extract all the fiber from fruits and vegetables, leaving just the water and vitamins and because of that once the juice gets in your system it takes only 20 minutes for the body to absorb and react to the explosion of nutrients. Depending on the combination of fruits and/or vegetables, you can experience an instant change in your body. For example if you need something to wake you up and get you going, a combo of fruits and ginger would do the trick.

Here are a few of the advantages to juicing once a day:

-It is the fastest and easiest way to get your 5-10 servings of fruit and vegetable a day

(which in the long run as I mentioned before, will help you stop looking for more food to satisfy that never ending hunger.)

-Goes great as a meal itself or as part of a meal.

It is very low in calories and sugar - if you are trying to lose weight, skip the sugary fruits and stick with citrus and apples.

-Easily digested.

(As mentioned before, the amount of time that it takes the body to process is extremely fast when compared to some of the foods we eat that can take hours to digests and up to 3 days to be released.)

-The safest way to do a fast or detox, because it contains all the minerals and calories needed in a short term cleanse and also gives your body time to rest and enjoy all the goodness that juicing has to offer.

The healthiest way to juice is to select vegetables and fruits whose colors reflect the entire spectrum from red to violet, as well as white. You can add purple cabbage, beets, carrots, kale, garlic, ginger, apples, grapes and even onions. The reason why it is so important to mix and match the colors, is because each of them correspond to a different set of vitamins and minerals to promote good health. As you start juicing  include as many colors and flavors of vegetables and fruits as possible to help you ensure the power and nutrients available in each of them.

I’m going to show you some of my favorite combinations; but remember, it takes some practice and a few mistakes to finally achieve what flavors you are looking for. The best thing is to listen to your body and drink what tastes good to you.

(You must have a juicer in all the recipes below.)

Green Morning Goodness

As I have been experiencing with many different fruits and veggies; this is my final adjustment to this morning drink that I enjoy everyday. For more sweetness feel free to add more apples too. Rich in Vitamins A, C and K, potassium, iron and calcium

Wash, peel and cut all your veggies bellow:

2 cups spinach

2 stalks celery

1 medium cucumber

½ bunch cilantro or parsley

2 apples

1 jalapeno (optional)

Push everything through the juicer rotating ingredients and serve with ice.

Beet This

This juice is surprisingly sweet and loaded with iron, calcium fotate from the beets and vitamins A, C and B6 from the carrots.

Always wash your produce, trim and peel if needed.

2 medium beets

3 carrots

2 apples

1 in ginger

Push everything through the juicer rotating ingredients and serve with ice.

Last but not Least

This one I am usually creative with all the leftover vegetables and add a nice serving of pineapple

2 cups pineapple

½ a mango (if in season)

1 cup spinach

1 bunch cilantro

½ cucumber

¼ red bell pepper|

push everything through the juicer rotating ingredients and serve with ice.

It is like summer fruit salsa in a glass, it is delicious and once again packed with nutrients that deliver the best flavors and benefits to our bodies.

So, that’s all for today’s journey. It’s a win-win experience with all the different fruits and vegetables. Be creative and take a step that will make a difference in your life.

Cheers Everyone!
