Raw Food Rehab

Adding LIFE to your years and years to your life!

I figured out why I feel everything has to be gourmet and a big part of why I feel like I'm failing.

See- most of my life, the vegetation we ate were green beans, broccoli and potatoes. my parents tried with other things, but smotherd them in cheese to cover the overcooked nasty sulfuric tastes that they made. But, when that's what THEY grew up on they had no clue that there were other flavors out there- and here lies the rub.

Since I previously had NO clue that vegetables could be as flavorful as they are, I don't know what combinations go well together, and I don't want to spend hours creating 1 recipe for dinner that will taste like a caca concoction. Now when it comes to cooking, I'm amazing. I've had compliments for my turkey and soldiers overseas actually write me and request my cookies, this whole raw food thing baffles me though. .

I know how food reacts to heat and the reaction that happens, and how to manipulate it to get what you want, so this fresh thing throws me off.

Don't get me wrong, I am introducing myself and my children to vegetables and new flavors (like I NEVER knew that red bell peppers were sweet- my parents only used green and that was only in eggs and cheese on "special" mornings) but there are SO MANY I have no clue what they taste like and I'm a little afraid of buying foods that will go to waste

any suggestions?

We buy one new fruit, one new veggie just about every time we go shopping, then look up raw recipes online so we can figure out how to use it!
Don't hesitate to try new recipes...maybe just cut the amount in half the first time, so you don't waste ingredients? & almost anything can be salvaged if you're willing to experiement a little...
...also, try the things that appeal to you visually, or by smell...don't be afraid to SMELL the produce when you're shoppping! & invite the kids to, too!*grin*

well, I found out that I don't like beets. LOL! I used 1/2 tsp in 3 quarts of a smoothie of a staple- strawberries, peaches, spinach and cherries- not feeling the beets. they're overwhelming. I may do 1/4 tsp but dang so far, not digging it! I may use it for a dye for fabric or something, but for food- it will have to grow on me.

thanks everyone for their comments. I like the idea of the picnic on the floor! that's a great idea!

I would try one new food a week.. Or buy one of a few different things make a dip and have a picnic on the floor in front of the TV. With tablecloth and paper plates etc. My kids loved this.

Try one new fruit and vegetable at a time. Also take the time to read and educate yourself about the greens ,veggies, fruit, nuts and seeds and all of the wonderful things it will do for your body. You will see these foods in a new light. Also vibrant raw foods are beautiful to the eye. The more I study, the more fascinated I am and thrilled to put this fantastic ,nourishing food inside my body. I just like the way it makes me feel!
