Real Food Rehab

No rigid rules, labels or dogmas.... just REAL food, for your body, mind & soul!

My husband suffers from depression/mood swings, he's been on various anti-depressants for the past 9 years until recently. He was taken off Imipramine 2 months ago so the the GP and a Psychiatrist could decide if he was Bipolar or not.  (I don't think he is but I'm not an expert)

Anyway the shrink suggested Omega 3 while wait until our next appointment so we discussed it and I said great, I have flax seeds and other stuff that's perfect for Omega 3... Guess what the silly man did today? He went and bought some Omega 3 capsules...

My dad is in deep in depression and Ill as a hornet,he lost his wife of 50 years to cancer,he is 75 .Tried everything with him.For 7 years I have drove out of State trying to take care of him and my mother before she passed. He also has had colon cancer. All this put me in very bad depression when but not till I returned home,I finally had to put my dad in a higher power and pray.As I ended up in hospital with high BP and 70 pounds heavier. My dad wanted to die he straight out said this to me.Been very upset with all this. But I had the courage to stand up to my dad and boy I let him have it,Never have I raised my voice to my dad allway's  himwith me.I told him he was hurting himself the most and his grandchildren and me.Now he is trying' he  has went to doctor and back on depression meds.It has been living nightmare. As for me I'm eating raw and doing my best to take charge of me and my health, lost 24 pounds and BP more stable.I just pray there is no return of cancer. Not ready to loose another parent. But I will say that was cute with your husband bringing home the Omega.Wish you the best.

@Sheryl Valentine. I'll research it, it may help.

The shrink is thinking about placing him on Seroquel, I've done my research on all those drugs and I'm not happy about it. Those mood controlling drugs cause liver damage. I too believe in nutrition being the best medicine especially for my husband. I really don't think he's Bi-polar, he doesn't have mood swings as such, not even the lesser types such as Bi-polar 2... . But it's still good.

We started cutting the processed junk out a couple of years ago and we're working on the rest, he's even willing to go so far along the raw food route with me, just not all the way.

We see the shrink next Monday so I'll have more info then.

Hi Aran,

You can do some research on it on line by googling SAM-e.  It's a really incredible product for mood as well as joints and liver.  However, if he is bi-polar it is not for him, I don't know why, but I do know that certain anti-depressants like the SSRIs can make bi-polar disorder worse.  Unfortunately, many drs prescribe these drugs without an adequate knowledge of the patient's condition or the drug for that matter.

The trick is finding the right doctor, drug and dose for these disorders.  What is his diet like? I really feel that many food disorders can be corrected with diet, and are in fact caused by high sugar diets (no not fruit) consisting of sugar and processed foods.

Yet, based on several things, I also now feel that some people have brain chemistry disorders than can be helped greatly by medication.

I learned all this going through it with my son, and I am also a chiropractor so have an interest in natural supplements for certain disorders.

If he is not bi-polar... SAM-e is a wonderful product for mood, joints and muscles and the liver

Well, if the capsules help, they'll be the perfect bridge to him trying the natural version. Fingers crossed for you both!
