How To Take Off 100 lbs (or More) Episode 1 Introduction

I created a YouTube video series where I show you what has been working for me as I’ve taken off 180 lbs so far.  As you can see, I’ve still got more than 100 lbs to go.  So we are going to do this together!

Really quick, to share my story, I have been fat all my life.  I was a cute fat baby, a chubby toddler, and then I was the fattest girl in school and it was not cute anymore.  I had terrible acne and no self-esteem.  I have been on a diet since I was 11 yrs old.  They all worked for a little while, but I always felt like I was barely hanging on.  I always felt like I was one bite away from a binge.  Every time I would go off my diet, I would gain more weight than I had lost, and feel demoralized and humiliated.  Then I’d gather all my courage, get ready, and start another diet.  It was a vicious cycle.  It continued, over and over, for years, till I finally found myself at 436 lbs at only 5’2”.  I was at the lowest point of my life.  I could barely walk, and any short grocery shopping trip or walk through a parking lot would have me red faced and huffing and puffing.  Everything hurt—my feet, my knees, and my back especially.  I had high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and high trigyclerides.  The only thing that was low was how I felt inside.  I felt hideous and ashamed and out of control.  I felt unlovable and unworthy and absolutely helpless to stop it. 

In 2010, my friend told me about the Raw Food diet and I got into a raw food community.  It made so much sense to me.  It gave me hope and so many people had taken off so much weight I knew that it was really effective for weight loss so I decided to try it.  I was super skeptical that I would be able to do it because I was sooooo addicted to fast food at the time.  I would go multiple times in one day.  But I saw so many people that were getting such good results that I had to try it.  So I did.  And I was successful!  I got over 100 lbs off. I felt super great.  So healthy and alive and full of hope.  But I found it hard not to cheat.  I would go on and off over and over.   In a colossally stupid move, I decided to cheat “just for the holidays” in 2010 and ended up falling off the wagon, being run over by the wagon, having the wagon back up and run over me again.  I gained back almost all the weight.  I got back up to about 391.  Then in 2014 I started trying again.  I went back to a raw food diet because I’d had the most success.  But it was still a struggle because I was eating really high fat raw and lots of raw sweeteners like cane juice and maple syrup and agave and I was still plagued with cravings.  Finally, this last January, I finally stumbled on the information I am going to share with you, and it has made all the difference.  Since January 1, I have taken off weight each and every week.  I usually take off between 2 to 5 lbs  in a week, around 13 lbs a month.  Since Jan 1 this year, I have removed 100 lbs.  What’s more of a miracle to me is that I no longer struggle with the cravings or feel like I am barely hanging on.  Every once in a while I will have a slip, and that will make me temporarily have cravings again, but now I know how to deal with that so it won’t derail my progress and I can quickly get the cravings to go away. 

I thought about waiting to do this series till I was at my goal weight.  The reason I am doing it now is because when you take off 165 lbs, not a day goes by that another person doesn’t ask me, “What are you doing?” So this is what I’m doing.

I’m also doing this because this is what I wish that I had available to me at 436 lbs at only 5’2.  Let me sum up every diet plan ever: Eat fewer calories and move more!  Or, just eat _____ and never eat____ and the weight will magically melt away.  Well I guess I’m just a muggle for sure because none of those plans worked for me for long.

You see, what they were missing was not WHAT to do, but HOW.  I know what to do.  I think most people who have had a weight problem all their lives are pretty much nutrition experts.  I know I am at this point.  So I knew what to do, I just couldn’t get myself to do it.  I was addicted to food, as surely as an alcoholic is addicted to booze or a drug addict is dependent on their drug of choice. 

As far as diets, I’ve tried them all.  I went on my first diet when I was 11.  I’ve been a member of TOPS and Weight Watchers.  I’ve Dealt a Meal and counted carbs.  I’ve done the Dash diet, the South Beach Diet, the Atkins Diet, and the oh so popular Paleo diet.  They all worked for a short amount of time.  Until I screwed up and threw it all out the window. 

So let me tell you what this plan is NOT: It’s not just going to tell you to eat less and move more.  In fact, you may eat more than you are used to eating.  You are not going to work out until you throw up like a Biggest Loser contestant. You do need to move, but we are not going to be running marathons or doing an ironman.  We are going to gradually build up gentle exercise that honors your body and avoids injury.

It’s not calorie restriction, but it’s not stuffing in the calories to hit a certain calorie target either.  Animals in nature don’t count calories, and neither do I.

You won’t be promised to lose 100 lbs in 100 days.  The thing is, if you did somehow manage to take off 100 lbs in 100 days, you would likely gain 150 in 50 days.  At least that’s always been my experience when I try a fad diet or lose weight very quickly.  I take it off, but it comes back and it brings friends!  The other thing that happens when you lose that fast is that you can lose other things too like your hair, and your skin tone.  You may end up looking like a melted snowman. 

We’re not going to be doing a juice feast or reboot as part of this.  I have done one, and I think they are great for lots of reasons.  Hey, I did a 40 day juice feast 5 years ago on green veggie juice only, and I haven’t had so much as a cold ever since.  If I had cancer, I would do a green juice fast in a heartbeat.  But I want to use this time to learn to EAT healthy food that nurtures your body and your health.

So here we go; let’s do this together.  We’ll talk about eating in a way that is the most loving, compassionate, eco-friendly, and healthiest for you.  We’ll learn what to eat to cut cravings and how to keep from being hungry.  We’ll talk about controlling our cravings and dealing with our emotions so we can actually stick to a plan.  We’ll talk about being consistent and making it one step closer to goal every day.

Another thing I’m excited about is sharing resources with you, whether it be a great YouTube chef that makes crazy yummy food with no sugar, oil or salt, or a great article about caloric density and how you never have to count calories again.
