Real Food Rehab

No rigid rules, labels or dogmas.... just REAL food, for your body, mind & soul!

I bought my first durian today! Yes, the "stinky" fruit that is banned in some public places in Asia. Wikipedia says it's "described variously as almonds, rotten onions, turpentine and gym socks." lol

My kid says it smells and tastes strongly like something that died. WHY?!

I found the aroma very faint and rather pleasant! And the taste... well OMG. It's like a custard with some kind of exotic floral/musk flavor. It was still partly frozen so it was like custard ice cream.

Oh well... more for me :D

The video below is the reason I had to try durian :) After tasting one, I don't think this is really as far "out there" as I had originally imagined :D

[Warning: YouTube flagged 18+... it's not explicit, just a little naughty.]

To me Durian is the KING of fruits!  It's the only fruit I know that is that "addictive"

Jackfruit tastes good, but Durian is of another caliber, a whole new experience, it tastes just AMAZING!!!

I enjoyed Shazzies video, she really made me laugh LOL

Just youtubed it.  I think it's a beautiful video.  It brings out a whole new perspective to raw foodism, one that really isn't explored.  The body is a temple, but this connects the fruit to it in a sensual way.

Oh dear, sorry for causing a stir with the video! I love Shazzie also :)

Ooh, I've been looking for a dragonfruit. The durian was expensive too. They actually had one that was HUGE... I mean it must have been 25-30lbs. I had no idea they got that big... and at $3/pound!

Durian in on my list to try - someday. I just tried my first Dragon fruit - very interesting that was. Seeds similar to Kiwi, consistency like a peach, sort of, and to me, green tasting. Interesting. Expensive though...so that will be a "when it's on sale" purchase.

Hi Basil -

I love Shazzie! And sorry about the video removal, but here is the part in our House Rules that explains our demographics:

- Posting inappropriate material, such as profanity, personal attacks, nudity, inappropriate, questionable or suggestive material will likely be cause for suspension or removal from the community. We have a very diverse group of guests that range in age from 10 yrs. old to 85+ so one of our priorities is to keep RFR a wholesome, family friendly site.

I personally have no problem w/ the content - however, I received a couple of emails of concern, and I do keep the same guidelines in place for all members.  I left the title so interested members can search for it by title on YouTube. So I appreciate you & sincerely hope you'll keep sharing your journey w/ us.  I LOVE durian : )
