Tony Robbins – Investing in Yourself
Tony spoke about why he likes to have interaction with his audience, writing things down helps you to remember 30-40% more but moving and speaking (interacting) helps you remember 80% more. Our 20th century teaching methods and how we have learned to learn are at odds with the 21st Century needs. In a passive or casual state information can go in or out. The engagementof the body helps bring your energy up; you need to become like a kid, don’t be worried about failing.
Tony questions the limitations we put on people. He sought out people who were doing things conventional wisdom would consider not possible, such as extreme athletes who are over 65. Sister Madonna started walking at 40. From 40 to 72 she ran 350 races including triathlons. On her 72nd birthday she was doing the Iron man. After the marathon and the swim she was a third of the way through the cycling when a wind came and picked her and her bicycle up and slammed her on the side of a hill breaking her collar bone and leaving her bruised. As a consequence the organizers made it have an age limit of 65 the following year, but Sister Madonna completed it alongside the other Iron Man contestants even though she couldn’t be official contestant. Because of that action they reversed their decision and have no upper age limit.
What human beings can do is incredible, but you’ve got to be a kid again. He spoke to a lady who at 104 had the world record shot put for her age group, but her age group went from 65.
Considering different states he gave the analogy of the difference between a child and a busy adult when encountering a giant puddle.
Tony then asked everyone to think of a goal that they really want to achieve. He then suggested that the reason you want to have the goal is to do with the feelings that achieving it will bring about. All we really want are feelings.
Don’t do what failures do, learn what drives you and turns you on. Whenever you give your best there is always another level above it.
Emotion is made by motion. Why succeed, achieve, make difference – because of how it makes you feel. You need to get the feelings right, all cultures teach you to fit in, and we have to learn to put ourselves into a different state, You DO emotions by what you do with your body and what you focus on. Does your goal have enough draw. A pull towards a goal is more powerful than a push.
PEAK STATE: Celebrate for no good reason. You don’t need an excuse to be happy. What’s more powerful than love, faith, courage etc. What you don’t use you lose. Sounds change the way we feel, so when getting into a peak state we can use sounds as well as motion.
The key is to master your own state. If you can do state management, there is nothing you cannot do. Success is 80% psychology and 20% mechanics.
Focus- what does it mean? Your partner is late for a dinner reservation, are you angry, worried, not care? This will be affected by your focus – I don’t believe s/he’s late again, they don’t care – anger. Or, I hope they are not in an accident – worry, etc.
Focus and the meaning you give to your focus control your destiny.
Tony gave the analogy of him being in a spin car on a race track, he had to learn not to focus on the wall when the car spun out of control, or that would be where the car ended up. When we spin out of control we need to focus on where you want to go, not on where you are afraid to go.
1) Focus on where you are going..
2) What does it mean?
3) What are you going to do?
Q: The state you are in when you make a decision will affect the quality of that decision.
If you are in a better state you treat people better and are better at work.
There is a pattern to what you do when you are passionate or dispassionate. People at the conference were to talk passionately than dispassionately about a topic. When passionate people lean in, speak more rapidly and louder than when dispassionate. You can change your biochemistry, by finding your triggers of what you do when you are passionate about something and then replicating them.
Tony spoke about how states get linked to situations regardless of whether or not they are really linked. He then asked everyone to think of a personal and a professional goal they want to achieve in the next 30 to 90 days and to write about why you want to achieve it – why it is a must for you.
Inner conflicts can keep us from succeeding. Belief is a feeling of absolute certainty. Once you believe something you find evidence of what you believe.
The Success Cycle
Success leaves clues always. Look at how other people have been successful.
Everyone has lots of potential, you don’t need any more. Nothing is going to happen unless you take action, but that may or may not lead to results. The belief and attitude you bring is the most potent factor that influences our success.
Five Keys to success
1) Raise your standards (Make it a must for you, not a should)
2) Change your limiting belief
3) Get a strategy that works.
Doing all this you get momentum. But then –Life happens! When something goes wrong, how you deal it at that moment determines your destiny.
4) Intensify your energy and emotion when you fell like it least. If you can step up in those times you grow the biggest muscles. Get back into your peak state.
5) Give, right when you expect to receive.
If you are giving to get nothing is better. If you are giving more, you give so much you receive (e.g. how can I give to my partner, children, customers). We are not made to be selfish.
Get your momentum going with inCANtation (not an affirmation, where you say I’m happy etc, when your not, but positive statements of intent) using a real voice with strength and certainty in it.
(Susan’s note here: Will you speak inCANtations or ICAN’Tations?)
E.g. Defy the odds. Step up. I am a force for good…
Never Settle. Find what you were made for. Every 30 days your cells are new. Today you are this year’s model not last years. The reason why you life stays the same is because of your limiting beliefs, if you change those, everything will change.
