Raw Food Rehab

Adding LIFE to your years and years to your life!

I am really struggling with a few ideas.  I like the way it sounds to "flush the fat" out of my body by eating more cleansing fruits, etc....like 80-10-10.  Even though I've never read the book (can't afford to buy it and can't find it in the library) I get the idea that it's LOTS of fruit and little fat/veggies.

I also don't know if I can afford to buy the fruits and such that will accomodate to supply the amount of calories on a 80-10-10 diet.  Can someone alaborate on this?

Would it be so different to just eat low-fat raw vegan over choosing so much fruit??

What is your opinion?  Those of you who are doing it....let me know what are the benefits.  I would also like to know from those of you choosing this lifestyle what is your background (ie. SAD, raw vegan, vegetarian, vegan, etc.)

I am not trying to question that raw vegan is the healthiest lifestyle.....but I do think sometimes I consume too much fat.

I also know that there are other "lifestyles" like Hallelujah Acres that promotes juices, greens (in the form of their barleymax, which is an awesome product) and 15 % vegan cooked foods....but strongly encourages everyone to be high raw vegan, as close to 100% as possible.

Sooooo that being said, I guess I feel confused by all the knowledge and trying to think of which way is better.  I know people say to listen to your body and do what feels right, but sometimes what is RIGHT doesn't feel RIGHT in the beginning.  You know???

Thanks for listening to me ramble.

I have the 80 10 10  book.  I have posted about our 2 week experiment on my blog here.

Since then we are mostly eating that way, which is to say, fruit for breakfast and lunch, then a big salad for supper.  I also have a four o'clock snack which might be fruit or might be unmentionable.

I am overjoyed at my new body.  I have slimmed down about 13 kilos since I signed up here at RFR about a year and a half ago.  So not all is due to 80 10 10, but can also be contributed to more raw food in general and making sure to be active (not gym or running or anything strenuous).

Sometimes I eat things that are "not in the book".  :-))  I don't want to worry about b12 so I eat some things that have it while I ponder the hollow near the apple stem.  I don't think it is cut and dried fact about how we obtain this vitamin.  (In the discussion about b12, Dr. Graham mentions bacteria and over-cleaning our food and that place on an apple.)

The hardest part about 80 10 10  is the 10% fat part for me.  I check my food on cronometer every once in awhile and I do more like 70 10 20.

80 10 10's watch their calories to be sure they are getting enough.  :-)  Totally different mindset!

I find it very freeing to just eat fruit for 2 or 3 meals, as much as I want.  I don't mind losing a bit of weight and if I get down to a certain point, I will adjust accordingly (eat more).  I rejoice at the sight of my big colourful salad, all the juicier now that we have the greens in the garden.

I don't think it is that much more expensive although that depends on what you compare it to.  We were in the habit of eating good quality food (meat, cheese, wine) and we also save on gas since we hardly use the stove anymore.  Not much of the food goes in the refrigerator either.

I do not wish to be dogmatic in any way and do not accept a label so I do not declare myself vegan or anything.  I did say recently that in principle I am an omnivore but in practice lately I have been raw vegan.  :-)

I will eat other stuff if we are in a restaurant, but I tend to choose more along the vegetarian or pescivore line.  Things that used to tempt me no longer do when I hold the idea of what they are made of and what they will bring me nutritionally in my mind for a few moments.  That is even the case with some raw food recipes.  Such a quantity of nuts and why these sweeteners?

The main thing is that I notice I feel better eating this way (mostly fruit and salad).  Signs of old age are fading rather than worsening.  My lighter weight gives me vitality.  People are noticing.  My husband...  :-)))

I will also add that food is not everything although it si major for our body, we also have mind and soul.  My spiritual path is leading me towards change and an opening of the mind and heart.  I'm sure that has an influence as one thing I notice about the people in the Arès movement are their vibrant eyes.

Hi Wendi- I think you can set your youtube to private and then maybe embed the link via the media button here??? I don't think you can upload a video straight from your computer to here tho- but I'm a retard when it comes to that :P  I'm sure Susan would know though. But just as a side note- unless you are really wanting people to see your youtube it will probably get buried under all the more popular ones ;)  People work hard to be the top rated for all to see, haha. Much success on your new journey! <3

Thank you, Maria, and all the others.  I think I'm gonna do what FEELS best, and I have been praying about it.  There was a time that I LOVED juicing in the morning....and seemed to do well.  I think the abuse my body has taken over the years needs high nutrient juices and then fruit and veggies and fat, but not toooo much fat.  I'm gonna go with that for now.  I've been to the grocery store and I'm set to get started fresh tomorrow.  Thanks you all.  I'm thinking of starting a video blog to chart my progress.  I'm thinking video blogging will hold me accountable in a way I never have before.  I think I would also like to make a recipe every once in awhile.  Not sure about how to go about it though....do I have to post it on youtube?  I think I'm afraid of posting for the whole world.....

@Wendi: My background. Vegetarian for over 10 years, since I was about 18. Extreme weight gain due to meds around age 28. My vegetarian diet didn't allow me to lose this weight, struggled for the last 5 years with it. Interested in raw since I heard of Ann Wigmore in the 90s. A lady I really admired healed artritis by going to a Hippocrates Institute.

I don't know about the gaining weight thing but otherwise I'm pretty much with Lyza on this one. I never ate a raw gourmet diet - it's too expensive and I don't have a dehydrator. I also wonder why we would want to dehydrate foods? Isn't the high water content in raw foods one of the benefits? Ok, gourmet raw is about having foods similar to SAD foods I guess. It also seems to require a lot of prep and I'm all about not spending much time in the kitchen. I eat very simple. Lots of greens and fruits and berries. Some seeds and oils. Nuts only on occasion. I also eat some cooked grains. I lose weight eating this way. For me being raw is not about following a strict diet - that's always failed me in the past. Following the seasons and the price seem to work pretty well for me. I like that there are really no recipies to follow - I chop up whatever I have around. The 8-1-1 seems a bit too restrictive for me personally. Maybe, I'm even close to eating 811 at times but it's not something I try to do. People are different, some find it liberating to have rules to follow, it gives them structure. Me - it freaks me out, makes me obssess and crash. So, low fat high raw vegan freestyle seems to work for me right now.

Thanks Betty! I agree. I lost 9 pounds this way without really trying. I think I will lose more, but for now my body is stable, but I am not overweight at all- I am 5'8" and can wear a size 4 jeans @ 132 lbs. (approx- don't have a scale- I weigh at my friend's house every now and then). Durianrider from 30bananasaday actually dares people to try to get fat eating this way!! lol It's usually people not telling the truth about everything they eat if they are gaining weight. It is true tho, I too have heard it can take your body a long time a adjust on this diet- it depends on how badly you have abused it. It took Freelee 4 years to lose 20 kilos I think it was, but look how skinny she is now! It takes time for a body to remake itself- 7 years total!! One whole year to remake your bones. But I don't see it as a gamble either- if you study our digestive system against those of animals you can easily see that this is the way we were designed to eat. If for some reason you must eat some cooked food find something vegetable like sweet potato or squash or something like that- low fat but has nutrition. This way keeps your body and brain fed and really does help keep one calm :)

Hi Lyza,

You suggest it is a gamble but not for me, I do lose weight.

For me I use chronometer and they say I need a minimum and there is a maximum of calories intake.. Kristina Carillo has an intake of 3000 cal. it’s because  of running a lot she said. My minimum is so much that i already have enough , i am a big eater lol.

Kristina Carillo advises to use chronometer , she is on the 80-10-10 too

I don’t know what you mean is it gaining on a high fruit low fat or losing weight like you said in  ‘eating an all fruit diet is a great way to detoxifying the body and probably it helps to lose fat quicker’   this confuses me but perhaps it is my English ,not understanding it always.

Wendy wrote , even Dr. Graham says it is better to eat low fat cooked food because sometimes we are in situations we have to choose for the lesser evil. The most evil is the fat.

In my aria nuts are very expensive, making my cashew cheese was expensive , almonds are expensive and they did not make me feel good ,had cravings a lot.

It is easy to put in chronometer what you want to eat set it on 80-10-10 and you can see what you need to eat , then look in de store if it is too expensive for you.

I like it,  it is fast food for me except the green leaves I like it to juice . I feel much calmer now.

So imagine what you need to eat on chronometer and look in the store for prices and what you say it is cheap to eat bananas in the US . Like you said when I try to eat raw food high fat I couldn’t ignore the cravings , my raw food flaxseed cracker did not satisfy me and sometimes I eat a real bad pizza.

I’m still have the anxiety if I noticed it is Friday ,take a way dinner in our family ,high fruit low fat is much easier and losing weight too.  My cravings are gone when i make a tiramissu from bananas ,dates cinamon ans an apple lol

Hi Wendi!!! :)  Hope you are doing well!!!   Here's what I have to say on this subject :)  I have heard of many people gaining weight on 80-10-10.  Why?  Because if you don't have a somewhat active to extremely active lifestyle, depending on your metabolism, then you likely may gain more weight than you burn off.  If it works for you, great, but I don't think it's fair to make the claim that it works for everyone.  Also it can be pretty pricey depending on where you live.  Eating an all fruit diet is a great way to detoxify the body and if you can do it, go for it, it probably will help the body lose fat quicker because there's no toxins getting in the way.  Remember to take a decent b12 supplement daily on top of it.  However, you need to eat a lot of calories from fruit daily to get energy/decent nutrition, and on top of that your body may not easily burn off those calories.  It depends on the person and how long your willing to do it in order to see the effects.  Freelee and Durianrider claim that it will start working if you do it for longer than 2-3 years.  That again, is a lot of money to spend on fruit if your in an inconveniently pricey area, and really doesn't make sense for some people who need a budget, and it is a gamble.

To remedy this situation, I highly recommend adding cooked carbs to your diet as a replacement for a bulk of the fruit, and going low on fats.  This too is what has been recommended by many of the "gurus" as an efficient way of living the lifestyle minus the price.  Just make sure you are getting a balanced daily amount of nutrients, through green juices, supplementation, or otherwise.

I'm a vegan and I have found cooked carbs really help me feel more energized than trying to eat a lot of fruit on a budget did, and a lot less worried.  Make sure they're not processed--make things like oatmeal or wheatberries, barley, and rice...Any whole grain.  Vary your diet.  Don't completely eliminate fat as it is a nutrient necessary to the body, and if you can't burn off all the calories from a high amount of carbs then you will need to add a little bit higher amount of fat to your diet since your not getting the fat grams from your high amount of carbs, say, an avocado a day as opposed to a quarter of one.  Follow your body--if you feel cold, shivery, and spacey, you may need to eat more fat.  But if you feel hot and sluggish, you may need to eat less.  Just wait a few hours till your next meal and really analyze what is truly going to satisfy you body and mind as a whole.  I have found that doing this helps me choose meals that really satisfy me and energize me for the rest of the day.  That is the true way of following your body.  Ignoring cravings is also bad because you can feel deprived and end up binging later on.  Let yourself figure out what you are truly craving by waiting...if you've been thinking about one particular food for over an hour, your body probably really needs it, so have a bite and really savor it, chew it a lot...then move on to a choice you think would be better for your body.  :)

Bananas are a fabulous and cheap way to get the fruit carbs in if you live in the US :)  I go to a wholesale produce shop to get them for 20 cents a bunch.  So there's also that.

80-10-10 refers to 80% or more calories coming from carbohydrates (primarily fruit, but veggies have a little too), and no more than 10% each of protein and fat- these are called macro-nutrients (carbs, protein, fat). When using Cronometer or Fitday, those programs will show you the break down of the food you input into those categories- but you can actually SET cronometer to 80-10-10, it's a little more sophisticated than fitday. It would be kind of hard for you to get 30% protein with leafy greens.... If you focus on high fruit and a large salad or two... or salad and green juice/smoothie you should be fine. Yes, fruit is for calories- and many of us eat tons of bananas b/c they are calorie dense, easy to eat and cheap!! ;)

Thank you all for your insight.  I do not have the money right now to purchase this book, but I am going to continue to look in different libraries in my area....then I will start saving for it.  I am continuing to have this feeling like sugar might not be the problem, but maybe I am truly needing to "flush the fat" out of my body and in order to do that I feel like I have to eat more cleansing fruits.  I have read somewhere that fruits were very cleansing and vegetables were more "building", so the fact that a high fruit diet would be very cleansing makes sense.  I know I won't be doing strict 80-10-10 (which I think is called that because it is  fruit, 10% greens/veggies, 10% fat) I think I might be closer to 60-30-10?? lol. We'll see, but I think my goal will be to be low-fat and make sure I get enough calories (which I will login to another site to keep track) so I guess that is why you end up eating more fruit.....higher calories??  Anyway, thanks.
