Adding LIFE to your years and years to your life!
I don't tend to cheer for or advertise for things, but I have to share the book I got recently from the library. "Diet Rehab" by Dr. Mike Dow is VERY eye-opening.
Long story short, if we start a diet and don't stick to it as easily as we'd like to it's not due to lack of willpower--it's literally all brain chemistry. He explains the downward spirals of food addiction--and they are addictions--because we end up needing more to get the same 'highs' or even just to feel normal.
It seems it all comes down to seratonin and dopamine and the reasons we eat 'bad stuff' is to get seratonin and/or dopamine, and that our eating of the bad foods to begin with is what stopped the body's natural production of and/or secretion of these chemicals.
The book's subtitle is "28 Days to Finally Stop Craving the Foods That Make You Fat" and he explains that adding 'booster' foods and activities to your diet BEFORE eliminating your pitfall foods make it easier to give up the bad stuff.
I won't go into a lengthy description other than what I've mentioned, but I highly recommend this book for anyone who wonders why they can't 'stay on the wagon' (though there is no 'wagon' to stay on here at RFR; it's a privilege to choose the limo!). Just know if you're struggling with any diet changes, don't be hard on yourself for not having willpower; that's not what it's about!

Comment by Michelle on June 2, 2012 at 1:56am -I can totally relate, Brenda. (Which is why I really wanted to share this!)
-Isn't it true, Bette? It seems so simple once we know about it.
-Exactly what I thought, Nathalie!
-You're welcome, Maureen!
Comment by Brenda on June 1, 2012 at 11:16pm Yes, there is definitely a chemistry going on in the brain that is creating these cravings. When these are taken care of, it is no longer a problem. Balancing the brain is a huge piece in our eating patterns and our eating patterns are a big piece of our balancing brain chemistry.
