Marsha, sit quietly and focus on the breath, taking even inhales and exhales should bring the pulse rate down. And yes it will improve, the more cardio exercise you do the healthier your respiratory system will get.
I see you have a Maine Coone - we have one two. A very lovable gorgeous boy called Oscar. He is 18 now and has lost a lot of weight in his old age so not quite as majestic as he once was but is just a sweetheart.
