Adding LIFE to your years and years to your life!

I bought some vitamin D supplements from WalMart.  Do they actually get absorbed?  Is there any inexpensive way to supplement for vitamin d- either by food or supplements?

The best way to get vitamin D is through the sun. 20 minutes out in the sun in the early morning or late afternoon. Just your face and arms need to be exposed. And don't take a shower right after. Give it a few hours to soak into the skin.

I know there are plenty of foods that contain Vit D but I can't think of which ones off hand. I'll have to look it up.
That is a problem for me. After I am in the Texas sun, the first thing I want to do is take a shower.. Sometimes I even take 3 showers a day. Texas is hot.
From what I understand, vit. D is better absorbed if you take it with milk or yogurt which can be difficult if you live a raw food lifestyle. I think that if you take it with fat it will be absorbed more easily because it is fat soluable.
Hope this helps!
Allison
Get the sun before ten am or after three pm. I spend 30 minutes but also take a D3 supplement.

My doctor said it's important to make sure the supplement is Vitamin D3 (it's actually a hormone and not a vitamin), and that you take it with some fat, so it can be optimally absorbed.
Shane "The People's Chemist" has a lot to say about Vitamin D. Google him.
When my dr. told me that I was very low on Vitamin D, we had mentioned about getting out in the sun more. He said that doesn't always work and I would probably need to take Vitamin D. I don't want to buy from a place like Walmart and haven't had a chance to get into the health food store yet.
Hey Sass- I checked out your friend the People's Chemist and he had a LOT to say about Vitamin D supplements. That was pretty intesting- according to him, Vitamin D supplements are a Hoax. Many different viewpoints on the web for sure!br />

This is in the Wellness Center-one of the rooms on RFR.
I take an over the counter Vit D and my levels have been going up.
Yes, Deborah, I agree he has lots of informative information. I choose to follow his advice and leave off the supplements. I just get my Vitamin D from the sun like my ancestors did before me, and I take mine in 15-20 minute daily doses outside in the sunlight. "They" say once you hit 60 and beyond you ought to up your outside time in the sunshine to 30 minutes. I also take cod-liver oil (flavored kind) quite reguarly too (that on the advice of the Delany sisters who lived beyond 100)! Don't know who they are? Google them and then read their books! Can't afford their books? Interlibrary loan them. WELL worth the effort.
Why did you say that abouty cod liver oil??????????? Now I am going to have to start taking it again!!!!!!! and it tastes so horrible. How much are you taking? I was taking a tablespoon a day- It is actually the smell that is so bad not so much the taste.

Ha!! I get mine at Walgreen's. It's "Finest Natural" brand and cherry flavor. Albeit cherry flavor that tastes a bit fishy!! Quick, down the hatch!
