Raw Food Rehab

Adding LIFE to your years and years to your life!

Since being on my raw food diet, I believe I'm finding out what foods my body reacts badly to - dairy being one.  I usually find that my nose gets stuffy - so I go from clear breathing through my nostrils to one of them being stuffed up.  It's not mucus - I believe it's inflammation.

So in place of animal milk I've been using almond milk, mostly in my smoothies.  And seeing as I have very little time to make fresh almond milk (i'm a mom and a business owner) I use the boxed, store bought kind.  But lately I've been getting the stuffy nose reaction after my smoothies.  I suspect it's the almond milk - or maybe just a mild cold (tis the season).

So I'm curious to know what other's opinions are regarding the store bought, boxed almond milk.  Good?  Bad?

I think that its not that great but would love to hear what others think.

If it's boxed up, it has been pasteurized (heat treated) and so has lost most of its nutritive content.  You can make your own in advance, or make green smoothies as many of us do, with water.  'Works fine.
almond milk in a box is still better that animal milk. we just do the best we can but plain water is good too.

Making fresh almond milk  is sooo easy!  Less expensive too!

You can use many kinds of nuts to make nutmilk.  Have fun!

Kathleen - I feel the same way, but if my body is reacting badly to it, then I need to find an alternative.  I think it could be the immune response kicking in, because I do notice that my nose gets stuffy after I eat a cooked meal.

Susan - I'll have to give that a go, but first I need to buy a nutmilk bag!  Could I use cheesecloth in the interim?

Blazin' Jane - I suspected as much, and I don't like the preservatives in the almond milk.  There should be 2 ingredients - almonds and water.  I think there's about 12!

Go to Home Depot or whatever hardware store you have near you...ask for a Paint strainer bag.  They are so inexpensive.

Hey Tiffany!  I always wonder about store bought almond milk as well. I used to use it a lot a few years ago, but now that I'm used to the fresh stuff, it's hard to go back. Keeping it in the fridge as a backup probably couldn't hurt, but I've found that almond milk is now one of the speediest things for me to make.  For mine, I soak the almonds before bed, take them out in the morning and rinse them, throw them in the Vitamix with 3x as much water as almonds, strain through nutmilk bad and voila!  It can take 10-15 minutes. So easy.
also, i  add vanilla extract and pitted dates to mine when I want it to be extra sweet and yummy. WHen I have a bit of time to spare, I'll put in some extra time making 2-3 quarts of almond milk and store it in the fridge. Great to have on hand.

I did store bought then did my own almond milk..now, I buy and enjoy Hemp milk... it is becoming more readily available and I think it is wonderful--no sugar added as most Almond milks out there!

It is easy to make nut milks and hemp seed milk. Add some medjool dates as sweetener and vanilla for flavor.
I realize I'm late to the party but wanted to add a comment to everyone elses.  When I first saw Dan McDonald talk about it, I noticed several brands of it in the local supermarket.  After seeing how Dan made it, very raw, I read the ingredients on the boxes in the store and was amazed at how much they added to it.  I understand the time constraint, but if you want to use it, you had better make it yourself or find a friend who will do it for you.  Good luck.
I'd use an organic cotton kitchen towels to do that until i get a proper nutmilk bag.
