Adding LIFE to your years and years to your life!
Help! I've been raw for nearly 10 years and the last 2-3 yrs. my digestion of veggies has gotten worse.
I use to have salads daily, and even before i was raw i had a daily huge salads full of greens and veggies.
Now every time i eat Any veggie that has fiber (lettuce, jicama, carrot, broccoli) my stomach goes into knots, pain, gas, constipation etc...
(all i have found that works okay is tomato, cucumber, and small amount of zucchini)
i take enzymes (for yrs) religiously but it has never helped.
Does this mean i need to cook my veggies again, and avoid lettuce salads too?
Has anyone had this happen to them? what did you do??

A lot of digestive problems have to do with a lack of pancreatic enzymes. I have recently come accross Dr. Kelley's protocol for curing cancer and other diseases. It is a 3-prong approach : diet, enzymes and detoxification. He's had an 80% cure rate out of 33,000 terminally ill patients. His protocol works for prevention as well. His diet is based on finding one's metabolic type and eating accordingly. If you eat the wrong foods for your metabolic type, you will suffer the consequences. You can purchase "Dr. Kelley’s Self-Test for the Different Metabolic Types" online. Also, you might want to read his book "One Answer to Cancer". This is available free as a download, and it is packed with great information for health building. I truly believe that we each need to find the nutrition program that works for us individually. We are not all built the same.
Also, you might want to see a Naturopathic doctor. There are so many things that can cause digestive problems and seeing someone who can take a look at you as a whole, from what you're eating or not eating, stress, probiotics, etc, could really be an eye opener.
I hope this helps some!

I used to have problems too. I went on the 80/10/10 way of eating raw (there's a book called 80/10/10), and all my digestive issues cleared up in less than one week doing this faithfully.
So I eat 80% fruits all day long, 10% protein through greens and veggies, and 10% fats - mainly in my salad dressings.
I've found that cucumbers, tomatoes, zucchini, and bell peppers are really fruits, in the way they digest. So they digest better with other fruits.
Proper food combining made a huge difference for me with digestion.
Hope this helps :)

Can I ask how long did you feel great, before it started going downhill?

Permalink Reply by Kasey on November 13, 2012 at 12:27pm Same thing happened to me on 811. I tried making it work for so long because it made sense to me. I even took Dr. Robert Morse's Detoxification course so, fruit being the best food on earth is deeply engraved in my mind, but I never felt good on fruit. When someone has an adrenal gland weakness, they don't metabolize sugars very well so fruit can be a nightmare. Also pancreatic insufficiency presents a big problem for someone trying to live off mostly fruit.
What I've been doing is a high fat and veggies diet, with herbs to strengthen various weaknesses in my body. At first I figured, raw is best so I'll have salads all day but it took me awhile to figure out it was the raw veggies that were screwing my digestion up. I was always bloated, gassy, often constipated. Right now, my meals are usually steamed veggies along with either a nut based yogurt similar to a Lou Corona's Coconut almond yogurt, or just avocados. I always have a green juice for breakfast.
I'll experiment with salads in the future but honestly, it doesn't matter how healthy a food is if you can't digest it. If I get gassy after a meal, I know I'm not digesting it properly. I can eat all the steamed broccoli and cauliflower I want with pretty much zero gas throughout the day, but give me romaine lettuce raw, or even certain veggies cooked like brussels sprouts or cabbage and I get gassy and bloated.
I definitely wouldn't be afraid of steamed vegetables. I would try to keep things simple at first and don't add too many different foods at a time or you will never figure out what foods are bothering you. Keep eating whatever raw foods throughout the day that digest well. If it were me, I would be ordering some of Dr. Morse's herbal formulas to help as well. He has a stomach and bowel formula which helps immensely. I would have to know more about any other symptoms you may have to recommend other formulas, but it sounds like you could use an adrenal formula as well as a pancreas formula since you have been taking digestive enzymes and may have weakened your pancreas slightly or at least made it lazy ; )
Hopefully that helped a little!
