Raw Food Rehab

Adding LIFE to your years and years to your life!

Hello all!

Well, my Costco membership is about to expire. I really don't use it much. Before I make the final decision not to renew, I am wondering if you buy any (and what) raw food ingredients there.   Keep in mind this could *possibly* be a good resource for me in the winter for fresh fruits and veggies etc. as I live in MI and do not have access to farmer's markets.... that would be super cold! ;)

I haven't really priced Costco out in the winter.  If anyone has and more info for me that would be awesome like: do they have dates and other dried fruits, raw nuts, frozen fruit, almond butter, preferably all organic etc.

How are the prices?

I haven't had much of a chance to check Costco while I have had my membership because my health hasn't been the best and I have had a hard time walking (long story short...I know...you totally want to know the story of my life!! LOL)

Thanks in advance for all of your help!!  You all RAWk!!

Allison

I had a membership when I lived in IL and I loved it! I would buy 10lb of Earthbound organic carrots for under $5. I loved their produce like: mangoes, apples, avocados, celery, spinach, lemons, seasonal fruit. If you figure out out what you use the most and then buy those it won't go to waste. I would also buy their nuts (almonds, pecans, and walnuts) they weren't completely raw as they were pasteurized but it was the best price I could find 'locally'.  Good luck!

The cheapest organic spinach I can find is sold at Costco; it is significantly cheaper (at least half the price of anywhere else. Their pineapples are ginormous and again half the price of anywhere else, and nothing sweetens a smoothy better than pineapple. And if you find it hard to face peeling and chopping pineapple first thing in the morning, you can buy fresh pre-peeled and cut into spears pineapple in the refrigerator section. It costs a bit more than fresh pineapple, but it is a great alternative when in a hurry. Grapefruits are another item that is sold at a decent price. And kiwis not bad.

Not all their produce is a good price, and some comes from places where heavier pesticides are used, so caution is warranted. All in all, I consider it worth it to have a membership.

Hello!

I get 10 pounds of (organic) carrots for less than half of what it costs at the regular store.

I get MOST of my greens for about half less (organic)

sometimes they organic oranges, when they do, they are the same price as the regualr ones.

I get some but butters that are really cheap also.

Our membership has 2 cards, and I split one with my mom. So in theory it would cost me $25 a year, but I think shes paid my half the last year... We also used to have kids in diapers, this was a huge saving also. Just the food alone I think I would pay for my half of the card in one month though. They have a pretty full produce section even in the winter here and a lot of organic. SOme things that are not on the dirty dozen that I dont or cant get organic I will also get at costco at a huge saving. My kids drink soy milk, we get it organic there for 1/3 what we would pay otherwise..

I just started using Sam's. I too split the $20 membership a year with my sister to save.  Organic raspberries were a steal there and the usually always have medjool dates.
Besides the spinach and carrots you can get large packs of medjool dates, organic quinoa, organic frozen berries. That's all I can remember at the moment. :)
When we had our membership, we used to buy the huge bags of frozen fruits for smoothies. I use local stores now for smaller bags, but if you have the freezer space, I would recommend them.
Oooh  yes, I totally forgot about the medjool dates. They were really good there -nice and plump. I think I miss Costco now ;)

Thank you so much for the input!  I'm going to have to go do some shopping!  I think I have another week before my membership expires.  That will give me a better idea, I hope!!

I appreciate all your help!  I'm trying to save as much cash as I can.  I'm the only one who eats RAW in our family of 5.  We all eat healthy, but my hubby and kids eat meat (mostly chicken & Turkey) a few nights a week and lots of dairy so it definitely adds up!  Our produce bill is through the roof!  It's ok , right? ;)

I had completely forgotten about Costco :) I'm so glad you brought up this topic. I was trying to wrap my head around what I would do in the winter time to find fresh produce. I still have my old membership to Costco so that will get me in the door to check out their organic section. I think it would be worth it for the carrots and greens alone though if you're doing a juice feast like I am planning.
