I need more iron as my levels are low.
They say calcium effects iron absorption in the body. I was making a fig, molasses and tahini iron packed smoothie but made it on almond milk.
Would you think almond milk would effect the iron in this drink because almonds contain calcium?

Permalink Reply by Elisa Bieg on February 20, 2013 at 1:35am If almonds are a concern because of calcium content, tahini should be too, since sesame seeds are high in calcium as well. Truth is, short of supplementation, it's a little hard to find something that supplies a high quantity of any mineral or vitamin without including also others that might influence its absorption.
I would focus instead on consuming iron-rich foods with vitamin-C, as that is something that is well known to increase its absorption. So perhaps pair the tahini and molasses with strawberries, or add chopped figs and molasses to your dressing for a tomato salad.
I also second Ida's suggestion to try nettle. I have only read about consuming it cooked or juiced to increase iron, but I don't know how you'd get around the stinging problem without cooking it. I have heard of people adding it to their smoothies before, but I have never tried it.
