Permalink Reply by Allen Lerner on November 30, 2011 at 8:51pm Thank you Cathy. Yes the sun if a first choice for me. Though when it is grey and wintery, like nowadays, wondering what can be eaten raw and vegan. I don't drink cow/goat milk or eat animal dairy.
Yes i have read much on the algae debate and enough enough B12 from them.
I guess fermenting foods will help some.
I've been wondering this as well! Some say that pee pollen has enough for us vegans.....some say it's not enough?????

Permalink Reply by Chuti on December 1, 2011 at 3:17am Hi guys, this is a really good topic.
What I've learned is that spirulina for instance does not actually contain B12 but B12 ANALOGUES which means that they mimic B12 in the body and attach themselves to the same places as B12 would. I believe through apropriate synthesis in the body these can be converted to B12 but this requires an exceptionally healthy gut and the amounts are small. These analogues can also give a false positive when testing B12 levels in the body.
There are many types of B12 such as cyanocobalamin, methylcobalamin, mycocobalamin and hydroxycobalamin. Basically meaning thet there is always a cobalt (-cobal-) and the amino actid (-amin) present. Some of these are attached to bacteria (cyano-), some to fungus (myco-), some to methyls and to hydroxyls. B12 is the only carbon-metal bond known in biology. Cyanocobalamin is most commonly sold as supplement, however it is not the most absorbable as it requires another partner in the body to actually convert to B12 and not all people are able to do this in their bodies. I have heard that mycocobalamin is the most absorbable natural form of B12.I think methylcobalamine and hydroxycobalamin are the ones used when giving in large doses to patients through injections.
I really think that not all supplements are created equal and personally I only buy those made by the Hippocrates Health Institute as they have a lot of research behind their supplements and they are naturally grown in stead of chemically produced in the laboratory. I've used their B12 for years and I've never been deficient (I have been vegan for 10 years).
The only natural source of B12 for vegans (as far as I know) is yeast. Therefore nutritional yeast (especially the kind grown in B12 solution) is a great addition to a healthy vegan diet. But I still supplement also as the amount of B12 in nutritional yeast does not meet my recommended daily intake.
As was mentioned by Cathy, vitD is available from sun, but if you do supplement make sure to buy D3 as this is from a vegetarian source. D2 is always from animal source.
I've heard that pollen hasn't got significant amounts of B12 and this can vary greatly depending on the pollen source.
So therefore - Happy supplementing! :)

Permalink Reply by Dianne Prescott on December 1, 2011 at 9:23am Nutritional yeast is a good source of B12. Even people that eat meat and dairy products may be deficient due to not being able to absorb it. B12 comes from the soil, not animal sources. That is where animals get theirs. Unfortunately, it is harder today to obtain your B12 from soil due to poor soil conditions from over farming, etc. Also, we wash all of our vegetables.
A great source of Vitamin D, of course is the sun. Mushrooms also have D and some are exposed to UV light after harvesting. Only after 5 minutes of UV light, they have 4 times the FDA recommendations. White mushrooms and crimini are used. Some places like Whole Foods sell them. The UV light exposure is best done after harvest. There are people that also expose their mushrooms to sunlight after they purchase them, but it is best to consume them that day. The light darkens them. Check it out.
