If that is what you are choosing to do, then select from Phase 1. If not, then choose from Phase 2.

Permalink Reply by Claudia Bentley on May 16, 2012 at 6:28am I have to do Phase 1 I've been doing raw for 4 weeks including vegetables and fruits and my blood sugars won't stabilize. He recommends Phase 1 for 3 months to get this under control. I'm just hoping I can stick to it. <3
Then stick to it! Give yourself some other reward than food for snacks...go for a walk instead!

Permalink Reply by Wendy Geesey on May 16, 2012 at 8:50am I personally don't agree with Dr. Cousen's approach to diabetes. Have you ever tracked your fat intake? I use fitday dot com- it's been a real eye opener for me- has helped me a lot. I believe it's the high fat in the diet that coats the cells and insulin receptors and prevents them from receiving sugar- which in turn leaves it in the blood, which raises candida... etc etc. If you would like another perspective on curing type 2 (and sometimes type 1) diabetes you can read Dr. Doug Graham's Book, The 80 10 10 Diet. Dr. Cousen's approach is much like allopathic medicine imho, by controlling the amount of sugar you eat and keeping it minimal. It doesn't correct the problem though, and a high fat diet will lead to even more problems down the road... just my 2 cents...
Permalink Reply by Claudia Bentley on May 16, 2012 at 9:11am Well I will say this, I was trying to follow Dr Robert Morse's approach on the Miracle Detox Diet and my sugars were always over 200's. He recommends a high fruit diet. I tried Dr. Cousens approach for one day and immediately went down to 135. He only recommends 1 Tablespoon per day of any fat, including avocados per day which is hardly any. I personally don't eat too much fat anyway due to gallbladder issues. I may have 6 Walnuts or a mini snack size avocado per day if any at all. I love bananas and just one takes me over 200. Dr. Cousens gradually adds the fruits back in through the phases beginning with low glycemix fruits in Phase 1 then berries in the 2nd and so on...I love bananas and I'm only giving them up temporarily till I get this mess under control<3
Permalink Reply by Wendy Geesey on May 16, 2012 at 9:16am May I ask how long you tried the high fruit thing? Dr. Graham says it can take 3-4 weeks for blood sugar to normalize. At any rate, I'm sure it's very frustrating... my husband is type 2 and can't get his diet under control let alone the blood sugar! :(
Permalink Reply by Claudia Bentley on May 16, 2012 at 12:37pm Yes four weeks! Aww I really feel for your husband it's so hard! He is really blessed to have you help him. I don't have much support @ home and it makes even harder. I have three kids and a hubby who loves to Barbeque!
Permalink Reply by Wendy Geesey on May 16, 2012 at 12:49pm Yikes- so sorry to hear that. That would be so hard to deal with :(
I keep telling him how lucky he is LOL!! but I think he calls my "support" nagging, hahaha. I try really really hard not to, but it can be so hard to bite my tongue when he tells me he can already feel pain in his kidneys and liver and when neuropathy is already starting to set in with his feet!!!!! There are a few ways to approach/manage diabetes (not all of them optimally healthy) but he can't seem to stay committed for more than a coupla days to any one method! I am prayerful, yet still see "the writing on the wall" :( He comes from an abusive childhood and food has always been his best friend (although, as we can see, it has not treated him very well).
I wish you the best Claudia- I pray you find something that works for you! <3
Permalink Reply by Claudia Bentley on May 16, 2012 at 1:37pm Wow! Does he go through the roller coaster ride of off and on or does he not try at all? The Kidney thing would really scare me straight just the thought of Dialysis makes me cringe. How long has he been diabetic? Is he Type 1 or 2? I do take Milk Thistle and Alpha Lipoic Acid to help support my liver. Is he on any meds or insulin? I can definitely relate with food being your friend I call it my drug...since I've never drank, smoked or taken drugs. As soon as I get upset I'm looking for food. I will keep you and your husband in my prayers too. He's gotta really want this too. I will keep you posted on how this ends up working for me. I have to get all my food shopping in first, so I don't crazy lol! Thank you for sharing your story...Peace <3
Permalink Reply by Wendy Geesey on May 16, 2012 at 1:45pm Hi Claudia, thanks so much for your prayers- we can really use them! Yeah, mostly a roller coaster, but some days he doesn't even try, some days he does. It used to be when he felt bad he'd just get in a slump and eat whatever (before diabetes diagnosis about 2 months ago- type 2). But now when he feels bad it motivates him to try again knowing that he just did it to himself. The doc gave him metformin (not insulin) and he doesn't like it... so doesn't take it regularly. I keep asking him when he's going to call her to find out what else he can take.... still waiting for that! He can't take milk thistle or a lot of other herbs b/c of severe allergies/sensitivities- UGH! He gets regular allergy shots... regular, hahaha, misses some weeks of those too!! >: He's probably been diabetic for 3 years, but when his urine was sticky around the toilet and he complained about being constantly thirsty I asked if he minded if I took a fasting blood sugar reading (I had a glucometer, lol!) it was 391 !!! So yeah, he's probably had it quite some time. Yes, please keep me updated- will send you a friend request :) it's frustrating/maddening and scary all at the same time cuz I can see where this is going!!
